These patterns were inspired by my little turtle figurine (see the "storytelling" blog - near the beginning of the semester - if you want to see him....)

Page one of a two-page spread. In front of the Foust building. I used pen & colored pencil. The lyrics are from a song on my ipod. The drawing has nice color, but it looks a little "kiddish" to me. If that makes any sense. I could have done better with my colored pencil rendering if I took a little more time, I think. But marker looks more professional.

Right outside the EUC. I used pen and marker for this one. Marker is definitely my favorite rendering medium to use, though I'm not sure how effectively I use it. Oh, and I used white colored pencil on just the grass.

class trip - a couple of sketches

I sketched this scene outside Monticello. Beautiful trees lined a long path and I kind of gravitated towards them. I regret not actually sketching the building itself.

This is a quick sketch of a detail from our visit to Falling Water. It was almost time to leave and I wanting to get a little something in my sketchbook. I wish I could have added more...

context, atmosphere, scale

I drew this scene right outside of the EUC building. Context is shown by the building details in the background. The atmosphere is very peaceful - the trees seem to dominate the space. They are fresh and yellow-green with the recent emergence of springtime. Scale is shown primarily by the trees and the scale figure. The tiny tree in the distance shows the clear depth of the space.

I can't say where my inspiration for this project came from. I have no precedent picture to show. The idea to use straws just popped into my head. I poked numerous holes in the cardboard with a nail; some of them I filled with straws, others I did not. These two aspects create two moments of light.

I actually prefer the shape of my first ideation. It seems more organic and interesting. But my use of straws is definitely stronger in the second ideation.

The cardboard we were given to use for this project did not fill the entire window. The overlapping of cardboard in the second ideation was a way to remedy this without simply creating a border. Each cutout is from a separate piece of cardboard. The way the cardboard is cut and overlapped mimics the pattern of light, only it flows in a different direction.
